During the official reception ceremony for the 48th Anniversary of Angola's National Independence, the diplomat also emphasised the clear intention of the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations.

She said that the Republic of Angola and the Swiss Confederation have shown interest in deepening cooperation in a wide range of areas, and that the mechanism for bilateral political consultations has been energised, where different matters of common interest are discussed, including assessing the degree of implementation and negotiation of agreements, the exchange of experiences, as well as regional and international issues.

In an event held in one of the Swiss capital's hotels, Ambassador Filomena Delgado also thanked the Angolan people for their friendship, fraternity and solidarity, which was confirmed by the presence of Swiss diplomats at the ceremony.

Angola's diplomatic representative also emphasised the reforms underway in Angola, which cut across the most varied sectors of national life and have seen notable successes in the country's business environment, generating opportunities for domestic and foreign investors.

In this regard, he highlighted the inauguration of the new Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport, with capacity to receive 15 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of goods a year, the forecast of economic growth in 2024 of around 2.8 percent and, among other measures, the exemption from tourist visas for citizens of 98 countries who wish to visit Angola and enjoy its varied tourist offer, including Swiss citizens.

He stressed the strong participation of the Swiss multinational, Trafigura, with 49 per cent of the capital, in the project to rebuild and expand the "Lobito Corridor", an important railway line that will connect three countries in the region (Angola, DRC and Zambia).

He said that Angola is a country that loves peace and stability, that is working to consolidate its democracy and economic growth, and that it will continue to develop its foreign policy based on the principles of respect and equality between states, the peaceful resolution of conflicts, co-operation between peoples, progress and social justice.

Finally, he addressed the Angolan communities living in Switzerland and Lichtenstein, and made a firm commitment that, with the collaboration of his team, he would do everything he could to ensure that the most worrying problems were resolved or reduced gradually, always on the basis of inclusive dialogue and constructive partnership.

Among those present at the ceremony were Ambassador Philipp Stalder, director of the Sub-Saharan Africa and Francophone Division of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Angola to the United Nations in Geneva, Margarida Izata, as well as members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Swiss Confederation and to the UN in Geneva, and representatives of the Angolan communities living in Switzerland and Lichtenstein. Also noteworthy at the event was the presence of the United States Ambassador to Switzerland, Scott Miller, and diplomatic representatives from Russia, China, the United Kingdom and many other nations from the four corners of the globe.

Also as part of the National Day celebrations, the Ambassador socialised with more than four hundred Angolan citizens living in these territories, at an event that took place last weekend in the city of Zurich.

Ambassador Filomena Delgado advocates strengthening parliamentary cooperation with Switzerland

berne2

On Tuesday in Bern, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Angola to the Swiss Confederation, Filomena Delgado, called for greater intensification of inter-parliamentary cooperation with Switzerland.

Speaking at an audience granted by the President of the Swiss Parliament, Martin Candinas, the Angolan diplomat said that there was "very little co-operation between the two parliaments, which is why it needs to be strengthened".

"Angola is living in a new era, in which the fight against corruption and the diversification of the national economy are priorities of the government of the President of the Republic, João Lourenço," in an act that forms part of the general plan of activities of the Diplomatic Mission in Switzerland.

The two interlocutors also discussed issues of cooperation between the two parliaments in various areas, such as the importance of youth, the role of women and gender equality in the work of parliaments; the possibility of Angolan parliamentarians travelling to Bern and Swiss parliamentarians travelling to Luanda to exchange parliamentary experiences; and the prospect of creating the Angola/Switzerland Parliamentary Friendship Group.

During the meeting, the two delegations welcomed the fact that the 147th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union will be held in Luanda next October, and President Martin Candinas once again guaranteed the participation of a high-level delegation from the institution he heads, in response to the invitation that the President of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, sent to her Swiss counterpart. The Swiss delegation also welcomed the fact that the next meeting of the organisation will be held in Angola and will be led by a woman.

The Ambassador provided accurate and up-to-date data on the country's political, economic and social panorama. She said that Angola needed investment in almost all areas, emphasising agriculture, food security, health and the local medicine production industry. He invited the President of the Swiss Parliament to encourage Swiss businessmen to invest in the national economy. In response, the parliamentary leader emphasised the importance of economic cooperation in bilateral relations
between the two nations, especially in the agricultural and energy sectors, which he considered crucial for his country's business investors.

The Angolan diplomat was accompanied by the Minister Counsellor, Estevão Alberto, the First Secretary and Second Secretary, Felício Teles and Isabel Paulo, respectively, on the Angolan side, while the Swiss Parliament was attended by the Member of Parliament and Vice-President, Thomas Hurter, and Ambassador Claudio Fischer, the Federal Assembly's Director of International Relations.

In the Swiss system, the Parliament (or Federal Assembly) is Switzerland's bicameral legislative power. The assembly is made up of two chambers, the Council of States, a chamber with 46 deputies, and the National Council, a chamber with 200 parliamentarians. The National Council and the Council of States together represent the legislative power in Switzerland.

The two Councils generally act separately, although they can meet for decisions that require agreement between the two chambers, such as: electing the Swiss Federal Council (Government), the President of the Confederation, the Judges of the Supreme Court or the General of the Army in the event of war. The Presidents of Parliament serve a one-year term.
